Aaron Rai Wins Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Dramatic Play-Off Showdown Versus Tommy Fleetwood

Aaron Rai demonstrated exceptional composure to claim the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on Sunday, beating Tommy Fleetwood in a dramatic playoff after a rollercoaster final round of competition.

The Englishman nailed a decisive birdie from just over eight foot to seal the win, repeating his only previous tournament success at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was also a play-off victory against the same opponent.

Sunday's Play Excitement

The champion started the last day with a one-shot advantage over fellow Englishman Fleetwood and Danish golfer Højgaard. He ended up with a overall score of twenty-under after a up-and-down, five-under closing round that included seven birdies and two bogeys.

Fleetwood moved a stroke ahead with the 16th and 17th remaining after a birdie putt on the 16th, but his rival tied it up again on the 17th and then missed a ten-foot birdie attempt to win outright on the last hole.

Play-Off Climax

That led to a playoff at the Yas Links course where Rai triumphed to claim the title and $1.5 million (£1.13m) in winnings.

{“Tommy is a phenomenal golfer and an even better person. To compete alongside him the final two rounds was really special,” stated Rai, the current world No 30. “You’re so focused on your game and staying in the zone, it’s difficult to put into words at the present how it is. It is amazing to be stood here.”

Notable Contenders

Rory McIlroy left himself just too much to do, coming up a stroke short in a shared third place with the Dane, after a stunning 62 final round of 62. It was his best-ever score on the DP World Tour, including eight birdies and an eagle.

The Danish golfer fired six birdie putts of his as well, but his chances of topping the standings were dented by a bogey on the twelfth. English golfer Richard Mansell produced an excellent final-round seven-under to finish in a tie for fifth place with Australian Daniel Hillier.
