The star has handed over the full amount of his £25k honor cash to the Music Venues Trust, which operates to protect the UK's independent concert spaces.

Fender was given the prize on mid-October as his new release the album was declared the top album of the previous year.

He has chosen to donate the funds to the Music Venues Trust, in appreciation of the vital role grassroots venues had in his beginning days.

"As an artist would not have achieved my current career if it hadn't been for all the performances I performed around the North East, and further afield, when I was starting out," said the artist. "These spaces are renowned, but they are in difficulty."

Beginning in 2023, more than 150 of these spaces have shut down – roughly 16% of the total UK scene.

Over the past year, well-known musicians like the band Pulp, Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all aided the MVT in its efforts to keep the scene afloat, by including a modest fee to their ticket costs, which supports local stages.

He also joined in, collecting in excess of £100,000 on his 2024 arena tour to assist numerous local spots across England, Scotland, and Wales.

The donation assisted venues that were dealing with possible closure due to difficulties caused by flooding, fires and bereavements, as well as licensing issues, conflicts and neighbor objections.

Additional spaces obtained funding support in modernizing amenities and technical equipment that positively impacted performers and fans.

"The idea that funds from concerts in large arenas helps the smaller venues, where it kicks off for artists like me, is just sensible," the star has stated.

He is not the first artist to give his Mercury Prize winnings to good deeds.

Back when they earned the prize in the mid-90s for their release Different Class, lead singer Jarvis Cocker declared that the group would contribute their prize money to the organization the charity.

During 2002, musician the artist shared her prize across a few charities, such as the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell charity.

"I also donated a thousand pounds to the center, to their gymnastics program, because I did gymnastics when I was growing up and they needed updated gear," Ms Dynamite told outlets.

Two years ago, Ezra Collective contributed their winnings to the youth organization that supported their act, in addition to other grassroots music organisations.

And winners that year the group contributed their prize to a MS organization after a acquaintance was identified with the illness.

"Receiving the award was sufficient," said artist Heather Small. "The cash was the bonus but we could do without the extra, because we had the main prize. So our victory touched the lives of others."

Last week, the Music Venues Trust announced it had saved several small stages in the South East, by bringing them into local control.

The Joiners in that area and The Croft in that location were acquired under the community ownership initiative, which is funded by Arts Council England and supporters who buy "shares" in the venues.
